Solaris Bus & Coach, based in Bolechowo near Poznań in Poland, has clinched yet another export deal. This time, the contract is for six city buses to be supplied to Sweden. The customer, who has opted for the Polish-built
Solaris Urbino buses, is the Polarbuss operator from the Swedish city of Umeä.
To date Solaris Bus & Coach has sold three units to Sweden  they are Solaris Trollino 12 trolley buses which operate in Landskrona. Now the Polish bus manufacturer‘s "Scandinavian contingent" will be strengthened by three Solaris Urbino Low-Entry buses and three low floor Solaris Urbino 18 articulated units.
Due to the latitude at which the city of Umeä is situated and its harsh climate, the Solaris buses will feature certain extra features specified by the customer. These include wider tyres (295 mm), auxiliary floor heating in the door area, as well as special door insulation as protection against snow and low temperature.
The contract is for the delivery of six buses, with an option of supplying further seven units during 2006.
"The buses due to be delivered to the city of Umeä represent another significant step for Solaris on the Scandinavian market, which we view as having significant potential for us. It is mainly with this market in mind that we have recently added the Low-Entry bus to our range. Now, we can see that it was indeed a correct move" said Krzysztof Olszewski, Solaris Bus & Coach chairman and chief executive.
The Solaris Low-Entry bus was officially launched at the IAA Commercial vehicle Show at Hanover last October. This design features the low floor section that extends only as far as the door amidships. In this guise, the Solaris Urbino meets the requirements of both city bus operators, as well as of those transport companies who require suitable buses for their suburban and interurban services.
